What to look for in a flooring portfolio
Look at the edges and the corners, not the middle of the room — that is where the difference between crews shows.
The open field of a floor is done by a machine and is hard to get wrong. Perimeters, closets, corners and the transitions to stairs are cut with different equipment and finished by hand, and a visible line where that work meets the field is the most common defect in a finished floor.
Raking light is the other tell. A photo taken with light running low across the surface will reveal scratch pattern that flat overhead light hides.
