What the two-component system buys you
The hardener is what produces the abrasion and chemical resistance; without it, the same base material performs like a standard single-component finish.
This has a practical consequence on a job site. Once catalyzed, the material has a working window and cannot be saved for the next job, which is part of why two-component finishes cost more per square foot than single-component alternatives.
It also means the finish only performs as specified if it was actually mixed as specified.
Where it fits, and where it does not
It suits high-traffic households and any floor where the owner wants a hard, water-resistant film with low odor during the job.
The trade-off is repairability. A film finish protects the wood by covering it, which means a deep scratch has to be addressed by recoating an area or the whole floor rather than by spot-repairing the damage.
If the priority is invisible spot repair and a very natural, close-to-the-wood look, a penetrating hardwax oil is the more appropriate specification.
Cure time is not dry time
Walking on a floor and putting furniture and rugs back on it are two different milestones, separated by days.
A floor that feels dry underfoot is not fully cured. Returning rugs and heavy furniture too early is a common way to mark a finish that would otherwise have performed for years, and it is not a product defect.
