Why single-coat matters on an occupied house

Coloring and protecting in one layer removes coats from the schedule, which shortens the number of days the household is displaced.

The short working window is the other side of that coin. Because the bond forms within minutes and excess has to come off inside roughly a quarter of an hour, the product is unforgiving of a crew working larger areas than they can manage.

This is a product where installer technique matters more than usual.

Repairability versus abrasion resistance

Hardwax oil trades film hardness for the ability to repair a damaged area without refinishing the whole floor.

Because the oil bonds to the top fibers rather than forming a film across them, a worn or scratched area can be cleaned and re-oiled and blended into the surrounding floor. That is not possible with a film finish.

The honest counterpoint: a non-film-forming finish does not deliver the abrasion protection that a catalyzed film delivers. Buyers who want maximum scratch resistance should choose a film finish and accept the repair characteristics that come with it.

Who this is usually the right answer for

Households that want a matte, natural, close-to-the-wood appearance, zero VOC during the job, and easy future spot repair.

It also suits owners of pre-1940 floors who want the character of the wood to remain visible rather than sitting beneath a glossy film.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rubio Monocoat as durable as polyurethane?

It is durable in a different way. It does not form a film, so it does not provide the abrasion resistance of a catalyzed polyurethane, but damaged areas can be spot-repaired and blended without refinishing the entire floor.

Is Rubio Monocoat safe for households with children or pets?

The manufacturer publishes 0% VOC and holds GREENGUARD Gold, Food Safe and Toy Safety certifications.

How many coats does it need?

One. The product colors and protects in a single layer, which is the basis of its name.

How soon can we use the room?

The manufacturer indicates light use after one day and about 80% cure at two days. Full cure takes longer, and rugs should wait.
